English
English is a compulsory subject from Year 7 to the end of Year 11. This recognises the high value placed upon written and spoken communication within our community, both at a personal level and in the workplace.
English is the study of the English Language, in all of its forms and styles, and learning how to apply this knowledge in the creation of a wide range of texts; written, oral and multimodal for different purposes and different audiences. In English, students develop their skills in speaking and listening, reading, viewing, speaking and writing.

Programs – Years 7 to 10
The Years 7 – 10 programs are framed around the Australian Curriculum. In Year 7 and 8, reading comprehension is our focus. Students learn comprehension strategies and are explicitly taught morphology. In Years 9 and 10, the focus shifts to writing in preparation for SACE. Students in all years from 7 to 10 explore texts suited to their age. An elective English class, Creative Writing, is offered in Year 10 in order to maximise each student’s choice of future pathways.
Programs – Years 11 – 12
In Stage 1, students must complete at least two semesters of any Stage 1 English course, with at least a C grade in each semester. Courses are offered with the flexibility to suit students who wish to prepare themselves for further study in English, as well as those who do not wish to continue in this subject at Year 12 level. In Stage 2, students can select Essential English or English. English is literature based, while Essential English explores the way language is used for different purposes in a wide range of contexts.
English as an Additional Language / Dialect
EALD is a subject which develops competence in both spoken and written English for students who communicate in a language other than standard Australian English. The students in EALD classes can be:
- Immigrants and refugees, either recently arrived or long term residents
- Students born in Australia, who have grown up in a home in which English is not the only language used
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
- Temporary residents such as exchange students or those on student visa
- Long term International students
EAL core classes are offered to year 7 and 8 students and EAL Literacy classes are offered from Year 7 to Year 10 in order to fast track their English language proficiency. The EAL classes are taught by trained EAL teachers and are supported by Bilingual SSOs (BSSOs). Stage 1 and Stage 2 EAL is also an option and SACE tutoring is also offered to students who need extra, small group support.
