Our School opens

Celebrations ran all day, however the builders were still working on the school and no rooms were complete, there was no power or light available.

Parents and friends Association was formed later a Ladies Auxiliary. These groups contributed greatly over the years with fundraising and other activities, supplying such things as seating, curtains, screens, utensils, etc. August 28th – 67 trees and scrubs were planted (Arbour Day). 14th December – first speech night, about 900 parents, friends and teachers attended. Salisbury High School catered for students from Elizabeth until Elizabeth High School opened in 1961.

Ushering in the new millenium

Number of business partners continue to grow. Over 200 people from DECD, Japan, America, New Zealand and South Africa. State industry and business leaders, Minister for Education came to the school. Since then, many more visitors from overseas and interstate have visited.

  • The event became an annual tradition and expanded to a two-night event by 1982.

1959 Highlights

  • Salisbury High School officially opened.
  • Celebrations ran all day despite the school buildings still being under construction, with no completed rooms, power or lighting available.
  • 296 students commenced in 7 classes.
  • The Parents and Friends Association was formed, later becoming the Ladies Auxiliary.
  • These groups played a significant role in fundraising and supplying seating, curtains, screens and other resources.
  • On 28 August (Arbor Day), 67 trees and shrubs were planted.
  • The first Speech Night was held on 14 December, attended by approximately 900 parents, friends and teachers.
  • Salisbury High School catered for students from Elizabeth until Elizabeth High School opened in 1961.

1960 Highlights

  • Student numbers reached 613, including 360 first-year and 273 second-year students.
  • The first School Magazine was published, edited by W.J. Dunlop.
  • An irrigation system was installed with extensive support from parent volunteers.
  • Approximately four acres of land were ploughed, harrowed and grassed.
  • The Prefect System was introduced.
  • The school houses were Cairns, Florey, Mawson and Oliphant.
  • The annual fete raised more than £500.
  • The canteen served an average of 100 lunches per day using volunteer assistance.
  • Students could participate in a wide range of clubs including Red Cross, Chess, Drama, Music, Science, Photography, Debating, French, German and Motor Mechanics.

1961 Highlights

  • The first Athletics Carnival was held on 29 April, with approximately 500 parents attending.
  • 135 students gained their Intermediate Certificates.
  • The opening of Elizabeth High School resulted in many students transferring, reducing enrolments.
  • Music and Drama continued to play an important role in school life.
  • The school choir, drama productions and bands entertained large audiences.
  • These traditions continue today alongside Dance and the Performing Arts.

  • The library collection reached 2,156 books.
  • The Salisbury High School Army Cadet Unit was established.
  • Regular cadet parades were held every Thursday afternoon.
  • The school’s first Leaving Class included 120 students, a record for a Class II school.
  • The canteen generated approximately £80 per week, providing valuable support to the school.

  • Mrs Elleen Wilkes became the school’s first adult student teacher.
  • Mrs Wilkes received Education Department approval after Teachers College did not accept married women.
  • A request was submitted to the Education Department for a new school canteen.
  • The Miss Salisbury High Quest continued as part of Activities Week fundraising.
  • Additional competitions included Miss Charity Quest, Miss Junior High and the boys’ “Mr Slob” contest.
  • The annual High School Ball at the W.R.E. Hall crowned the successful Quest winner.

1968 Year Book

1969 Highlights

  • Prefects oversaw school socials, which were held each term and were well attended.
  • Approximately 700 students attended the school.
  • Only 19% of Matriculation students held employment outside school hours.
  • Miss Salisbury High was Ann Devlin.
  • A new wing was completed and operated by Matriculation students.
  • Seven rooms were destroyed by fire during the year.
  • Subsequent redevelopment ensured improved facilities for future generations.
