Vocational Pathway
Your Journey Starts Here
Vocational Pathway

Vocational Education and Training (VET) gives students the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification (Certificate I, II or III) in a wide range of industry areas, including Animal Care, Automotive, Engineering, Construction, Plumbing, Electrotechnology, Hair and Beauty, Hospitality and Food Processing, Health and Community Services, Resources and Infrastructure, and Creative and Digital Technologies.
Students combine VET with their SACE studies, setting them on a pathway to tertiary study, further vocational education, apprenticeships, traineeships, or employment.
VET students have a flexible timetable and study load, allowing students to complete their SACE while gaining industry qualifications.
Why choose VET?
There are many benefits to completing a VET course.
Students can:
- develop practical work-related skills that increase employability
- gain an understanding of real workplace environments and expectations
- obtain industry-specific knowledge and experience before committing to a career pathway
- get a head start in their chosen industry while still at school
- gain dual accreditation, as VET achievements can also count towards the SACE
- in some cases, contribute their VET course towards the ATAR required for university entrance. This contribution is only available upon completion of a full Certificate III qualification.
Pathways to Success
VET at SHS
Salisbury High School is part of the Northern Adelaide State Secondary Schools Alliance (NASSSA), which offers a wide variety of courses across multiple industry areas. Please visit https://nasssa.com.au/vet to explore the available industry pathways and view detailed course information.
From Year 11, students can study a Flexible Industry Pathway (FIP) course, which may run over one or two years. To select a FIP, students must apply in year 10 through the VET Leader and provide evidence of industry engagement. This may include their Year 10 Exploring Identities and Futures (EIF) studies, work experience, a short VET course, Hear from the Trainer reflections, a Try a Trade activity, or related learning in a school subject. Students are also expected to demonstrate strong attendance, satisfactory literacy and numeracy skills, and a genuine interest in the industry area. Successful applicants will complete a Literacy and Numeracy assessment to determine course readiness and identify any support requirements.

Some industry pathways also offer advanced stackable qualifications, allowing students to further develop specialised skills following successful completion of their initial VET course.
Some VET courses offered through SHS are delivered on-site, while others are delivered at partner schools or local training facilities. Students may therefore be required to travel to another learning site as part of their studies. Travel and associated arrangements remain the responsibility of students and their families.
Beyond school, vocational pathways provide valuable opportunities leading to meaningful careers, further study, apprenticeships, and traineeships. Students are encouraged to explore options available through TAFE SA and other Registered Training Organisations.
For more information about this pathway please contact the VET and Careers Leader.
