Future-focused learning in a supportive environment
Science is a dynamic, collaborative and creative human endeavour arising from a desire to make sense of our world. Through science, we explore the unknown, investigate universal phenomena, make predictions and solve problems. Science gives us an empirical way of answering curious and important questions about the changing world we live in. Science knowledge is revised, refined and extended as new evidence arises and has proven to be a reliable basis for action in our personal, social and economic lives.
Science enables students to develop an understanding of important science concepts and processes, the practices used to develop scientific knowledge, science’s contribution to our culture and society, and its uses in our lives. It supports students to develop the scientific knowledge, understandings and skills needed to make informed decisions about local, national and global issues, and to succeed in science-related career.
Program Content
In the middle school (7-10) all students study a full year of science and assessment occurs through a variety of tasks including:
- Practical inquiries
- Investigations/Research
- Information Reports and Explanations
- SHE Tasks
- Tests and Exams
- Class books and Science Starters
Students study a full year of Science in years 7-10. Students are assessed against the Australian Curriculum Achievement Standards using the assessment criteria:
- Science Understanding
- Science Inquiry
- Science as a Human Endeavour
Students in senior school choose the branches of science that best suit their needs. Students have opportunities to participate in activities which encourage further study in Science and Technology, including robotics and other Electronics-based projects.
Senior school Science offered at Salisbury High School includes:
- Stage 1 – Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Psychology, Scientific Studies
- Stage 2 – Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Psychology, Scientific Studies
Scientific Studies allows flexibility to suit student interests and future aspirations. The program has been designed to engage students’ interests in local, national and global issues associated with science whilst developing their conceptual understanding of scientific principles in their area of interest.
